New Study of Splenda Reveals Shocking Information About Potential Harmful Effects

Posted By administrator on March 26, 2009

I read this article and I feel obligated to post this. Please remember that you need to check out everything new in the grocery store and you can not believe everything you see on TV.

James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.

According to Turner, “The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study … confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label.”

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

It’s very important to realize that Splenda (sucralose) is actually NOT sugar, despite its marketing slogan “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar”. Rather it’s a chlorinated artificial sweetener in line with aspartame and saccharin, and with detrimental health effects to match.

Splenda was approved by the FDA in 1998 as a tabletop sweetener and for use in products such as baked goods, nonalcoholic beverages, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices, and gelatins. Sucralose is also permitted as a general-purpose sweetener for all processed foods.

The approval was given after the FDA supposedly reviewed more than 110 animal and human safety studies, but as you’ll soon find out, out of these 110 studies, only two were human studies, and the longest one was conducted for four days!

There’s overwhelming evidence that consuming artificial sweeteners will likely wreak havoc on your body. Previous news has centered mainly around artificial sweeteners’ ability to impair your appetite regulation and leading to weight gain.

For example, it’s been discovered that diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome and, ultimately, heart disease.

However, the study mentioned above, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, found even further disturbing news besides weight gain. Splenda:

·      reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50 percent

·      increases the pH level in your intestines, and

·      affects a glycoprotein in your body that can have crucial health effects, particularly if you’re on certain medications

They also found unmistakable evidence that Splenda is absorbed by fat, contrary to previous claims.

It’s truly disturbing that Splenda can destroy up to 50 percent of your healthy intestinal bacteria, as these bacteria help maintain your body’s overall balance of friendly versus unfriendly micro-organisms, and support your general health. Many people are already deficient in healthy bacteria due to choosing highly processed foods. This is why a high quality probiotic is one of the very few supplements I highly recommend for nearly everyone.

The Diet Fallacy

The belief that consuming artificially sweetened foods and drinks will help you to lose or maintain weight is a carefully orchestrated deception. So if you are still opting for diet choices for this reason, please understand that you have been sorely misled.

In reality, these diet foods and drinks can cause serious distortions in your biochemistry and ruin your body’s ability to control calories. As a matter of fact, it’s been shown that diet soft drinks can double your risk of obesity!

Nearly a decade ago, studies were already revealing that artificial sweeteners can:

·      Stimulate your appetite

·      Increase carbohydrate cravings

·      Stimulate fat storage and weight gain

Unfortunately, most public health agencies and nutritionists in the United States still recommend these toxic artificial sweeteners as an acceptable alternative to sugar.

Now, I am definitely not a fan of sugar, but if I had to choose between sugar and any artificial sweetener, I would choose sugar, hands down, without question. I strongly believe artificial sweeteners are even more dangerous to your health than an excess of sugar.

The Health Dangers of Splenda

According to James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health:

“This report followed accepted policies and procedures and the results make clear the potential for disturbing side effects from the ingestion of Splenda.

It is like putting a pesticide in your body. And this is at levels of intake erroneously approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

A person eating two slices of cake and drinking two cups of coffee containing Splenda would ingest enough sucralose to affect the P-glycoprotein, while consuming just seven little Splenda packages reduces good bacteria.”

The web site www.truthaboutsplenda.com lists a variety of consumer complaints from Splenda consumption, such as:

·      Gastrointestinal problems

·      Migraines

·      Seizures

·      Dizziness

·      Blurred vision

·      Allergic reactions

·      Blood sugar increases

·      Weight gain

My site also contains a long list of personal testimonials from readers who have suffered side effects from Splenda. In fact, we have more people on our site that have reported adverse reactions to Splenda than were formally studied in the research submitted for FDA approval!

The symptoms are so numerous I can’t include them all here, but the following are common symptoms, usually noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:

·      Skin – Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.

·      Lungs – Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.

·      Head – Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).

·      Nose – Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.

·      Eyes – Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.

·      Stomach – Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.

·      Heart – Palpitations or fluttering.

·      Joints – Joint pains or aches.

·      Neurological – Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

Beware – You Could be Consuming Splenda Without Your Knowledge

You also need to be aware of the fact that although the bulk of Splenda is sold to processed food manufacturers and soft drink bottlers, it could turn up in your medicine as well, as nearly 10 percent of all sucralose is sold to drug companies.

Many times sucralose (Splenda) will not be listed in the drug information, so there simply is no way you would know you are consuming a potentially dangerous artificial sweetener. However, if you experience any of the symptoms above even though you’re avoiding Splenda and other artificial sweeteners, then it may be worth investigating the ingredients of any medications you’re taking as well.

Splenda Has NEVER Been Proven Safe for Human Consumption

As of 2006, only six human trials have been published on Splenda. Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption, and the two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects.

36 people sure doesn’t sound like many, but wait, it gets worse: only 23 total were actually given sucralose for testing, and here is the real kicker — The longest trial at this time had lasted only four days, and looked at sucralose in relation to tooth decay, not human tolerance.

Even more shocking, the absorption of Splenda into the human body was studied on a grand total of six men! Based on that one human study, the FDA allowed the findings to be generalized as being representative of the entire human population. Including women, children, the elderly, and those with any chronic illness — none of whom were ever examined.

The FDA claims they reviewed over 100 studies conducted on Splenda. What they don’t tell you is that most of the studies were on animals. And, those animal studies reveal plenty of problems, such as:

·      Decreased red blood cells — sign of anemia — at levels above 1,500 mg/kg/day

·      Increased male infertility by interfering with sperm production and vitality, as well as brain lesions at higher doses

·      Enlarged and calcified kidneys (McNeil stated this is often seen with poorly absorbed substances and was of no toxicological significance. The FDA Final Rule agreed that these are findings that are common in aged female rats and are not significant.)

·      Spontaneous abortions in nearly half the rabbit population given sucralose, compared to zero aborted pregnancies in the control group

·      A 23 percent death rate in rabbits, compared to a 6 percent death rate in the control group

Chemically, Splenda is More Similar to DDT Than Sugar

Yes. Splenda bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar.

Sucralose is in fact a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. It does start off as a sugar molecule. Then, in a five-step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule.

This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature, and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. As a result of this “unique” biochemical make-up, McNeil Nutritionals makes its claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, hence it has zero calories.

But, if you look at the research (which is primarily extrapolated form animal studies) you will see that in fact an average of 15 percent of sucralose IS absorbed into your digestive system, and according to this latest study, it is also absorbed into your fat cells.

Unfortunately, if you are healthy and your digestive system works well, you may be at HIGHER risk for breaking down this product in your stomach and intestines!

Your Healthiest Alternatives

If you have a craving for sweets, rather than trying to find “healthier” ways to continue indulging in them, it is in your best interest to learn ways to relieve your cravings.

The obvious one would be to stop eating any of the products to begin with. But sweets are powerfully addictive – sugar has even been shown to be more addictive than cocaine. Stevia is a preferable natural substitute, which can be used in making most dishes and drinks.

However, complete avoidance of sweets is often necessary to break your addictive cycle, as your hormones insulin and leptin likely play an important role in your cravings.

If you are unable to achieve abstinence from sweets, your emotional connection to cravings might be an important factor for you. One of the most profound methods I know of for diminishing the effects of food cravings is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is the psychological acupressure technique routinely used in my practice to help people reduce their cravings.

There is enough evidence showing the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners to fill an entire book — which is exactly why I wrote Sweet Deception. If you or your loved ones drink diet beverages or eat diet foods, this book will explain how you’ve been deceived about the truth behind artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose — for greed, for profits … and at the expense of your own health.

Snoring: Do You Shake The House Down?

Posted By administrator on March 25, 2009

According to wikipedia, snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases, it can be rather loud and quite unpleasant. The structures are usually the uvula and soft palate. The irregular airflow is caused by a blockage and usually due to one of the following:

    * Throat weakness, causing the throat to close during sleep

    * Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in the muscles

    * Fat gathering in and around the throat

    * Obstruction in the nasal passageway

Statistics on snoring are often contradictory, but at least 30% of adults and perhaps as many as 50% of people in some demographics snore. One survey of 5713 Italian residents identified habitual snoring in 24% of men and 13.8% of women, rising to 60% of men and 40% of women aged 60 to 65 years; this suggests an increased susceptibility to snoring as age increases.

Wow, almost 50% of people snore. I think it is a little higher, because all of my friends and family complain that their spouse snores. However, we are getting up in age and according to the stats, that is what happens. I heard the other day that when we get older our skin looses elasticity. So if the obstruction is “lazy” skin, it makes a lot of sense why we snore when we get older.

How can adaptogens stop snoring? I am not sure anything can stop snoring, but what I am saying is that I have seen more then one marriage saved by a little unknown secret. This combination of adaptogens has something about it that can make the house from shaking to a quiet murmur. Here it is: take the PM and the CARDEO right before you go to bed. You will fall asleep quickly and stay asleep and you are supporting your heart. If you ask me why this works, I will tell you, “I don’t know, all I know is that it works”. This combination was discovered by pure accident, so take the advice and slip your spouse a little PM and CARDEO they will thank you and you will get some sleep.

Organ Cleanse: One Very Important Step To Never Forget

Posted By administrator on March 24, 2009

Today I went to a FREE seminar given by a local Naturopath. She has been going all over the world giving this talk. WOW I learned a lot. I got a great bonus; I found out that not just Americans are unhealthy.

One of the most interesting things I learned today was that you can’t just do an organ cleanse. The Dr. gave a great analogy. She compared our bowls to a toilet. When you do a colon cleanse for your bowls, all you are doing is scrubbing the toilet, but never flushing it. Can you image the smell? The secret to getting the most out of any organ cleanse, is to flush out your system before, during, and after the cleanse.

Here are three ways to flush out your system while doing any organ cleanses.

1. Water, Water, Water…. You need to drink half your body weight in water a day. This is so important that you do this. Think of it another way. If your fish bowl is dirty what do you do? You change the water so they do not die. However, you never think of that for your own body. The cleanse will release the toxins; it is your job to flush it out of the body. Water is the key. Oh, make it room temperature so it does not stop your digestion process.
2. Sweat to whatever floats you boat. Exercise is a great way to flush out the toxins. Sweating pushes toxins out through the sweat glands and through the skin. One of my favorite ways to sweat is to sit in the sauna at the gym. I only stay in there for about 15 minutes or so after a workout. I feel great after that. I know you all don’t have that opportunity, but there are some great home products you can get.
3. Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. This will help to push the toxins through your waste. The saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, is an old one, but sill a good one. Apples are a great form of fiber. Again helping you release the toxins through the waste. I have a client that was so toxic that he decided to go on an apple diet with our PURE spray adaptogens for five days. He went through a bad healing crises, but now he is feeling great. He lost 10 lbs of waste in his system. He also passed a gal stone.

If you are going to do any kind of organ cleans, just remember these three points so you can flush your toilet clean. A clean body can’t grow anything it shouldn’t.

Are You What You Eat?

Posted By administrator on March 20, 2009

I want to tell you about a book that I just bought; You Are What You Eat by Gilian McKeith. This book has so much information on how to stay healthy. She really explains how to get to the root cause of the problems we all have and how to solve them naturally. She has a great seven day detox in the book as well as what to do after the seven days. This book also has recipes that are easy to fallow.

I had a friend who was having trouble with hemorrhoids. I looked it up in the book and we realized that you get them from all different reasons, but the biggest is not drinking enough water, as you have to push really hard when you are in the bathroom. Then they get inflamed by having a toxic liver. To much sugar in your diet can cause a flare up. So if you have this problem, you need to do a liver cleanse. She also suggested getting a few things that help with looser stool so you are not straining.

Gillian also talks about stress, and how it affects your body. She talks about adaptogens in the book also. It is nice to hear about adaptogens in other places by other people. As a regular person, we just want to know that what we are putting in our body is really good for us. The only problem is she talks about the adaptogens one at a time. That is where I come in with the spray adaptogens. You can get 12 adaptogens in just a few sprays a day.

So if you are having problems, and would like to get to the root of the problem, get her book and get ready to be healthy.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Posted By administrator on March 17, 2009

This is going to be a short post. I do not want to keep you from drinking green beer, eating corn beef and cabbage, and dressing up in all the green clothes you have in your closest.

Just remember that if you do go out and eat and drink to much, make sure you spray your PURE adaptogen so you don’t get a hang over. New Years Eve my husband and I drank a little to much and all we did was spray the PURE when we left the house and then when we got home. I woke up feeling great the next day.

Have some fun and be safe?

Daylight Savings Time Got You All Mixed Up?

Posted By administrator on March 12, 2009

I was at a networking meeting bright and early this morning at 7:00 am. When it came time for me to give my 30-second commercial, I said good morning and I got no reply. I then asked who was feeling the effects of daylight savings time? They all laughed. Now I got them. I was full of energy, happy to be awake and not at all feeling the effects of the time change.

That is what adaptogens do you for. They give you the energy to be happy to be alive and feeling great. This was the first time that I had a line to purchase my spray adaptogens. I guess the energy I was showing finally got through to them. If you are also having the same problem, you should try to PURE spray. This spray has 12 of the top adaptogens to help your body fight the effects of stress.

According to the Physicians Desk Reference the absorption rate your body gets is through a spray is at almost 100%. They now have a few drugs in sprays due to the same reason that the adaptogens are in a spray form. One example that comes to mind is if you are having a heart attack they use to dissolve a pill under the tongue, now you carry around a little spray bottle. I know of this one, because my dad has had heart problems for a while now and he has fallowed the progression of these pills to a spray.

What kind of energy problems are you having? Do you find it hard to wake up in the morning? Are you ready for a nap at 3:00 pm? Do you have coffee in the afternoon? Do you wish you had the energy to work out at the gym after a 8-9 hour day at the office? If you said yes to any one of these, you will love what the PURE does for you and the energy you will have.

Eleutherococcus Senticosus – The Adaptogen for stress and much more…

Posted By administrator on March 11, 2009

I want to give you information on the adaptogens that have already met the criteria set by Drs. Brekhman and Dardymov’s. I am going to do this in between other blog postings. This way you have a greater knowledge of what we are talking about when we use the general term adaptogen.

Eleutherococcus Senticosus (eleuthero, also called Siberian ginseng) has many benefits over Asian ginseng. According to the book Adaptogens Herbs for Stength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by David Winston and Steven Maimes, some of these benefits are it is more common, less expensive, easier to harvest, and more broadly adaptable to a wider range of people. Eleuthero also meets all of Brekhman and Dardymov’s criteria of an adaptogen.

If you would like to read an article from Brekham on Eleutherococcus, the name of it is “A New Medical Plant of the Family Araliaceae-The Spiny Eleutherococcus,” (1960)

As an adaptogen, eleuthero helps the body adapt to stress. It does this by encouraging normal functioning of the adrenal glands, allowing them to function optimally when challenged by stress.

Eleuthero has been shown to enhance mental acuity and physical endurance without the let down that comes with caffeinated products.

Evidence is also mounting that eleuthero enhances and supports the immune response. Eleuthero may be useful as a preventive measure during cold and flu season.

Recent evidence also suggests that eleuthero may prove valuable in the long-term management of various diseases of the immune system. It is also used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome, jet lag, and adrenal fatigue.

I suggest that if you would like a more in depth explanation of this adaptogen, read Adaptogens Herbs for Stength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by David Winston and Steven Maimes. This is the most comprehensive explanation I have ever read.

Have a great stress free day.

Lets Talk Stress

Posted By administrator on March 10, 2009

I have run into a lot of people lately that have told me they are under a lot of stress. When I ask them what is stressing them, they are responding with things like no money, scared of losing my job, and I am going to wrap up the rest of the answers in one word – economy.

Here is a list of thing you can do to help with your stress.

First, I am going to tell you to use the PURE adaptogen spray. This is what adaptogens were made to do – help your body with the effects of stress. Now make sure you catch that. Adaptogens help your body, not your mind or the feeling you get when someone cuts you off in traffic. However, this is the most important step. When your body is trying to manage stress, it stops doing other thing it should be doing. For example, when your body is in the flight mode, it knows it has to beet the heart and keep the digestion working. What it puts to the side are things like your cholesterol, high/low blood pressure, and controlling your pancreas so you get the right amount of insulin.

Now that we have the body covered, lets talk about ways you can calm yourself. My husband goes right for the cigarettes. Some people rant and rave at their spouse or their kids. When this feeling comes over you, take a few deep breaths. Really that is what the smoker is doing – taking a few deep breaths.

Try listening to a meditation CD. Sitting calmly can help to easy your thoughts and get you into a quiet place. Don’t just dismiss this one. My sister said, “I don’t have time to pee and you are telling me to meditate?” My answer is still yes! Make the time. Get up 10 minutes early an just lay in bed and turn on the meditation CD. You could stay up for 10 more minutes and listen to the CD. Either way, fit it into your schedule.

Go for a walk. Fresh air can do wonders to clear your head and start again. When I am designing something and I get stuck, I go for a quick walk around the block. Get that heart pumping and you will be surprised how good it makes you feel.

My final thought on getting rid of the stress you are going through is to stop and think about how you feel when you are in the middle of it. What made you feel this way? Do you have any control over it? How could you have handled the situation better? Once you have answered these questions, you will be surprised how little stress you have because about 50% of these situations, you have no control over so it is not worth getting worked up over.

Remember to help your body and give it adaptogens, and in return, it will give you a long and happy life:-)

Allergies: Tis the season

Posted By administrator on March 10, 2009

I spent the afternoon with my sister-in-law today. She was not feeling to good because in Texas, it is already pollen season. And you know what that means, allergies. She sat outside at a festival, for two days, with the pollen falling like snow. She has all of the symptoms that come with allergies: watery eyes, runny nose, and headache.

Tis the season for all of these symptoms plus some. I use to also have this same problem. Now, I sat outside next to my sister-in-law for those two days, and I did not even have the watery eyes. The only thing I can attribute that to is the adaptogens I take everyday. This is actually my second spring out of the last 10 that I just feel like jumping up and down everyday. My flowers are blooming. The trees are starting to green up. My seed for flowers and vegetables, are sprouting from the ground. The beauty I see every day, in spring, makes me smile. I get such a feeling of joy when everything around me is in bloom. Maybe I feel this way because I use to feel so bad from allergies at this time of the year, I never got the chance to enjoy it.

I think, you get allergies because your immune system can not fight off the allergens in the air. With so much of it falling from the trees, your body really needs to be at its peak. Adaptogens can help your immune system get what it needs. So if your immune system is strong, then your body will be able to fight off a lot more of what you through at it.

If you are like my sister-in-law, you don’t need to suffer from allergies. Just give your body what it needs and it will give it back.

Acid Reflux: Three Easy Tips On How To Get Rid Of It.

Posted By administrator on March 4, 2009

Now that you know the root cause of acid reflux I want to give you some tips you can do to get more enzymes into your digestive system.

My husband suffered for years with a “bad stomach”. When ever he ate anything with red sauce, pizza, pasta, or soup, he would need to take several antacid tablets. Now, I am Italian, I love red sauce. It was a staple in my home when I was growing up. Every Sunday my mom would yell across the house giving me the recipe for the pizza crust we made from scratch. You see, Sunday was her day off from cooking. With six other brothers and sisters, she needed it.

So I made some changes in the way I cooked and on Sunday we would have pizza, but it was with a white sauce. Not to bad of a compromise, but I could not figure out how to change the spaghetti sauce my mom taught me to make.

So after several years of eating a whole batch of chili by myself, I finally convinced him to make a few changes.

First, thing he did was increase the enzymes in his digestive system. He is a smoker, (I know shame on him) and smoke is one of the culprits of killing the enzymes in your body. He did that by eating yogurt. Make sure that you are eating one that has bifidus lactis in it. This helps to regulate your digestive system and gives you the enzymes you need. He ate the yogurt every day for breakfast for only about three weeks. Then he went to only a few days a week and now he only eats it when I buy it, about one cup a week.

I have to say that he can eat all the red sauce he wants and not get any heart burn. The other day I made a huge pot of chili and he ate it for dinner and lunch the next day without any trouble. For him, it was like a little piece of heaven.

The second thing he did was get some exercise. Now, I am not sure if this really helped, but he lost 30 pounds in about three months and has not had one episode of heart burn. I am feeding him as much organic food as I can afford and making some healthy dinner choices for both of us. We eat at least one fish dinner and one bean or vegetarian meal a week. I hope he does not read this, because I do not know if he realizes it or not, so shhhh.

The last thing he did was get his stress under control. He has a very fast paced job with a lot of math involved and the constant fear of making a million dollar mistake. He is very good at what he does and is at the top of his field. The stress was make his stomach turn, in his own words. He start to take the adaptogens on a regular bases. Every morning he was spraying adaptogens (pure) and every night (PM). He had noticeable changes in his mental clarity at work, which gave him the confidence of not making a mistake. He was getting to sleep in record time and staying asleep. He use to wake up thinking of a problem he could not solve and lay awake trying to get to the answer. With a full eight hours of sleep, he was waking up refreshed and ready for the day. He also found it a lot easier to go to the gym after a 8-10 hour day at work.

All in all, my husband has made some easy changes to his lifestyle with the support of the adaptogens and now he does not have any acid reflux or heart burn.

I do want to mention one more thing. We caught his heart burn before it got to be at the prescription level. If you are taking any medication, your process may be a lot longer. You may also think about getting those enzymes in your system, them try to fix or repair any damage you may have due to the acid reflux. We will talk about that in another blog posting tomorrow.
